Just 28% of Americans Feel That Tariffs on Canada Are a Good Idea 🇨🇦

The results from a survey of 1,500 eligible U.S. voters conducted by GZERO Media and Abacus Data on January 23-24, 2025.
The survey question asked: Do you think putting a 25% tariff on all Canadian-made goods imported into the U.S. is a good idea or a bad idea?
Tariffs on Northern Neighbor are Unfavored
This survey took place before Trump's announcement on Saturday, February 1st, 2025, of 25% tariffs on imports from Canada and Mexico (10% on Canadian energy), along with 10% tariffs on China.
These tariffs were subsequently delayed from going into effect by 30 days after discussions with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Mexico's President Claudia Sheinbaum.
- The majority of respondents (38%) view the tariffs as a bad idea overall, while 28% consider it a good or very good idea.
- From the same survey, 55% of respondents see Canada as a close or best friend of the U.S., with 84% thinking free trade makes both countries better off.
