Food Makes Up 44% of Global Waste 🍎

Key takeaways
- Food & green waste accounts for a majority of the world’s garbage
- The amount of waste generated is expected to climb significantly by 2050, particularly in Asia and Africa
Waste is growing faster than the population
According to the World Bank, global waste is growing at more than twice the rate of the population. This is because waste generation scales up as income levels rise.
For example, daily per capita waste generation in high-income countries is expected to grow by a modest 19% by 2050.
On the other hand, low- and middle-income countries (where incomes are rising quickly) could see their waste generation grow by 40%.
