Do You Tip Your Local Barista? ☕
What we’re showing
The percentage of Americans who tip in various scenarios, according to a survey conducted by Bankrate in 2023 (n=2,437).
Where Americans tip the most
Tipping culture is generally the norm in North America, so its no surprise that 65% of Americans always tip their restaurant servers. The next scenarios with the highest share of “always tip” are hair stylists and food delivery workers.
Tipping your barista ☕
When it comes to tipping at coffee shops, there is an almost even split between those who “always tip” (22%) and those who “never tip” (23%).
Context: In late 2022, Starbucks began prompting in-store customers for tips, causing backlash on social media over whether or not tipping was necessary.
