Younger people are less likely to vote than older people
In many countries, there are large differences in voter turnout between younger and older people.
In the 2022 French presidential elections, 76% of those aged 18–24 voted, while 92% of people aged 50–59 did. Only very senior people (aged 80 and above) were less likely to vote. We see the same pattern in the UK and the US. About half of younger people voted in their 2019 and 2020 national elections, while around three out of four older people did.
However, this gap between younger and older people isn’t always this large. The difference in Germany’s 2021 parliamentary elections was less than 10%.
