Bezos Ends WaPo’s Tradition of Making Presidential Endorsements
What We’re Showing
This graphic lists past presidential endorsements made by The Washington Post (WaPo), a major American newspaper owned by Jeff Bezos since 2013.
Why This Matters
On Jeff Bezos’ instruction, WaPo has ended its long-standing tradition of making a presidential endorsement. As shown in this graphic, WaPo has regularly endorsed the Democratic candidate.
What makes this move controversial is that it was made just weeks before the election, and after WaPo staff had already prepared to endorse Kamala Harris.
It’s being reported that “more than 200,000” people have cancelled their subscriptions to WaPo since the decision was announced. Some WaPo staff have also resigned in response.
Bezos has since posted an op-ed explaining his rationale for the decision.
