Social Welfare in Germany by Federal States

The distribution of social welfare recipients shows clear regional differences: Hamburg and Bremen top the statistics with 2.7 percent, while Thuringia and Saxony have the lowest proportion of welfare recipients at 0.9 percent. Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg benefit from a stable economic situation and good infrastructure, which is reflected in lower recipient rates.
Notably, more than half of the recipients are women, often affected by old-age poverty due to insufficient pensions. Key contributing factors include the gender pay gap and a higher proportion of part-time employment.
