Nvidia is the Latest Addition to the Dow Jones Industrial Average
What we’re showing
This graphic lists all of the changes made to the Dow Jones Industrial Average in 2024 so far.
Why does the DJIA matter?
The DJIA reflects the performance of some of America’s largest and most influential companies, including Apple, Raytheon Technologies, Goldman Sachs, and Nike.
Being added to the DJIA means a company is widely recognized as a prominent and stable U.S. corporation.
Milestone timeline: NVIDIA replaces Intel
This is the biggest story of the three DJIA changes, given Nvidia’s historic rise (and Intel’s downfall). Here are some key facts to know:
- 1999: Intel joins the DJIA alongside Microsoft. Coincidentally, this is the year Nvidia introduced its first graphics processing unit (GPU), which are now one of the world’s hottest commodities
- 2007: Intel turns down a deal to make processors for the iPhone, allowing companies like ARM and Qualcomm to take over the mobile market.
- 2017: Intel’s manufacturing business continues to fall behind and is overtaken by Asian rivals like Samsung and TSMC.
- 2020: Nvidia’s market value overtakes Intel’s as its GPUs become crucial for developing artificial intelligence.
- 2023: Nvidia becomes a trillion-dollar company for the first time
- 2024: Nvidia replaces Intel on the DJIA
