UnitedHealth Still at #1
Despite a hefty drop after the killing of its CEO in Dec. 2024, UnitedHealth Group remains the most valuable insurance company in the U.S. with a market cap of $473B. The company was worth over $500 billion prior to the murder of CEO Brian Thompson.
UnitedHealth is also the world's eighth largest company by revenue, bringing in $372 billion in FY2024.
The company has made several major acquisitions in recent years, including LHC Group, a provider of in-home healthcare services, for $5.4 billion.
Progressive Gains
Taking the second spot in this ranking is Progressive Corporation (which is known for its ads featuring "Flo", a fictional saleswoman who has appeared in over a thousand ads since 2008). Rather than health insurance, Progressive focuses more on insuring vehicles (personal & commercial).
Shares of Progressive Corp have climbed 230% over the past five years, significantly outperforming the S&P 500's return of 81%.
