Terrorist Attacks Surging in The Sahel

The Sahel, a region of north-central Africa spanning from Senegal to Eritrea, has seen a significant increase in terrorism in recent years.

The region has seen a tendfold increase in the number of terrorism-related deaths. In 2024, the Sahel accounted for over half of all terrorism deaths globally.

According to the Institute of Economics & Peace, the Sahel's surge in terrorism can be attributed to weak governance, ethnic tensions, ecological decline, as well as transnational jihadist growth and geopolitical competition.
