U.S. and Russia Hold 88% of World’s Nuclear Weapons
- Despite reductions since the Cold War, the global nuclear arsenal remains significant, with nine countries holding about 12,121 warheads as of early 2024.
- While the total number of nuclear weapons is declining, the rate of reduction has slowed over the past three decades.
- The U.S. and Russia together hold around 88% of the world’s nuclear weapons and 84% of the warheads ready for military use.
