A Breakdown of Global Electricity Demand in 2024

In 2024, global electricity demand reached a total of approximately 30,966 TWh. China emerged as a dominant consumer, generating 10,066 TWh – about 32.6% of the global total. This marks an increase from its 28% share five years ago due to sustained growth that outpaced the world average. In contrast, the United States produced 4,401 TWh, accounting for 14.3% of global demand. Meanwhile, the European Union contributed 2,727 TWh, equivalent to 8.8% of worldwide consumption. India also played a significant role, with an electricity demand of 2,054 TWh, or 6.7% of the global total. Additionally, economies that individually contribute less than 2% each combined for 26% of global electricity demand.
