This Chart Shows the Flow of People Globally
What We’re Showing
This graphic visualizes annual net migration by region, from 1950 to 2023 (10-year intervals). All data comes from the UN World Population Prospects 2024.
Note that "Northern America" only includes Bermuda, Canada, Greenland, Saint Pierre and Miquelon, and the U.S.
The Flow of People Between Regions
Northern America, Europe, and Oceania are gaining people from other regions every year. In other words, immigration exceeds emigration (people leaving).
On the other hand, Africa, Asia, and Latin America & Caribbean are losing people. Asia is seeing the most outflows, with a net loss of 2.6M people in 2023.
