Political Leaning by Occupation
Does your job tend have more Democrat or Republican workers?
Using data from the Federal Election Commission (FEC), Zippia totaled campaign contributions in 2023 and then filtered by occupation. Many US job titles tended to skew Democrat or Republican, while a large number filled out the spectrum in between. The most bi-partisan job is Enrolled Agent which had a 50% even split between Democratic and Republican workers.
MY METHODOLOGY: Because the job titles were filled in by the contributors themselves, they had variance. Many overlapped or were redundant. Some job descriptions were too vague or even too specific. Of the 521 total jobs surveyed, I eliminated the overlapping titles as much as possible for this political spectrum, narrowing it down to 180 general occupations. I also did not include ambiguous titles like “Senior Program Associate” where it was unclear if “senior” referred to an older person or seniority in the position. Also I learned that there is a difference between a paramedic and an EMT (paramedics have more extensive training). So I included both in that case, for example.
NOTE: Any other party affiliations such as Libertarian or Green Party were not included in the data, per Zippia’s methodology. Only Democratic and Republican donations were looked at.
