Additionally it lists the top eight states by number of people gained and lost in the same time period.

Data is sourced from the Census Bureau, published December, 2024. 

Texas Hold ‘Em

America’s second-most populous state has gained a whopping two million new residents since 2020.

That’s more new residents than the population of South Dakota—twice over.

Texas’ sunny weather, lack of income taxes, and more affordable housing (compared to the coasts) makes it an attractive destination, especially in the era of remote work.

Meanwhile, Florida gained 1.7 million people; the largest percentage increase (+8.2%) across the country.
