Multiple Wildfires Are Ravaging Los Angeles
As of Jan. 10, 2025, several major wildfires continue to ravage the Los Angeles area, claiming the lives of at least 10 people and destroying over 10,000 properties.
On Thursday, Los Angeles City Fire Chief Kristin Crowley said the Palisades fire, is "one of the most destructive natural disasters in the history of Los Angeles."
According to estimates published by J.P. Morgan, the insured losses from these fires may exceed $20 billion, the costliest in U.S. history.
Experts cite climate change as an exacerbating factor of the out-of-control fires. Intense drought, a dry winter and strong Santa Ana winds whose gusts exceed 100 mph created the ideal conditions for the fires to spread rapidly in the Los Angeles area.
At one point, the Palisades Fire was spreading at a pace of five football fields per minute.
