The Biggest Corporate Fines Handed Out in 2024 đź’°
What we’re showing
This graphic details four of the biggest corporate fines handed out in 2024.
Multiple records broken in 2024
2024 has been a standout year when it comes to government crackdowns on businesses, especially in the U.S.
For example, TD Bank’s settlement with the U.S. included a record $1.8B to the U.S. Treasury Department’s Financial Crimes Enforcement Network.
Meanwhile, Cummins’ settlement with the EPA was the largest penalty in the history of the Clean Air Act, as well as the second largest environmental penalty ever.
The EU is also getting involved—the $2B fine it imposed on Apple is the bloc’s first-ever antitrust penalty against the iPhone maker.
Many smaller fines in 2024
There have been many other fines handed out in 2024, though for smaller offences.
In October, American Airlines was fined $50M for repeatedly violating disabled passengers’ rights. An investigation revealed the airline had mishandled and/or damaged thousands of wheelchairs.
Also in October, Apple was once again caught in the crosshairs, this time regarding its credit card partnership with Goldman Sachs. The two companies have been fined a collective $89M for failing to resolve charge disputes in a timely manner.
